Maple Leafs activate Joseph Woll, call up Easton Cowan, assign Artur Akhtyamov to Marlies

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a series of roster moves on Friday, headlined by goaltender Joseph Woll being activated from his conditioning stint.

Maple Leafs G Artur Akhtyamov has been assigned to the Toronto Marlies. F Auston Matthews has been placed on injured reserve retroactive to November 11, 2025. F Easton Cowan has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL). G Joseph Woll has been activated for selection.

This move indicates that Woll could be in line to make his season debut against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. He recently finished his conditioning stint, where he went 0-1-1, posting an .885 SV% and a 3.72 GAA in games and a half of action.

Woll was placed on leave on September 23 and ultimately spent more than a month away from the team before resuming training with the team in recent weeks. Although he did not specify his reason for his extended absence, he expressed his gratitude to the Leafs for their support during his time away from the team.
“I’m really impressed with the amount of support I’ve received and with that a big thank you to my teammates and I’ve said that to them as well, just for all the support they’ve given,” he said on November 7. “I want to thank you. I know I asked for privacy and you (Leafs media) gave it to me, so I really appreciate that too.”
Artur Akhtyamov was reassigned to the AHL’s Toronto Marlies after serving as a backup in Thursday’s game against the Los Angeles Kings. Dennis Hildeby, who got the start in that game, will return as a backup until Anthony Stolarz returns to the lineup. He missed the previous game after being injured following a net-front scrum sometime in the first period against the Boston Bruins on Tuesday, and will be sidelined with an upper-body injury.
Captain Auston Matthews, who had been out of action for at least a week, was placed on injured reserve until November 11. Responding to Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov’s letters, Matthews later threw a retaliatory hit against the towering defenseman, and one of those hits caused what turned into a lower-body injury, though it’s unclear which one it was. Both he and Stolarz are listed as day-to-day, according to head coach Craig Berube, and their respective injuries are not considered serious.
Easton Cowan returns to the mix after being assigned to the Marlies on November 5 following the return of Scott Laughton to the lineup. Prior to his reinstatement, Cowan had been scratched three times, tallying one goal and three assists in his ten appearances. He ended up appearing in two AHL games, recording one assist, but was a scratch in the Marlies’ most recent game, suggesting he might return to the NHL in short order.
