When the snowstorm Brady had finally waited, he builds the ice rink of his dreams, but the snowstorms do not stop, so every day he digs the ice rink out of his love for hockey, and that dedication pays off.
“Brady Brady and the Great Rink” by Mary Shaw, illustrated by Chuck Temple is the second story in the anthology Our gameThose hockey stories from different Canadian authors and illustrators comprises.
When someone reading the series for the first time, it is useful to have the explanation why Brady is called Brady Brady in the start pages of the book. The statement relates to the most important principle of the book, and the intro facilitates the reader in the story and the world of Brady as a character.
The starting point of hockey obsession and waiting for a snowstorm translates into Brady’s motivation to create the ice rink and to maintain it constantly. It shows that he will not give up because hockey is something he gives so much about.
His family was also established to have different personalities. The reader understands what kind of people they are and what their roles are in the story immediately when they meet those who sets a nice dynamic between them and Brady.

I have read all the stories in this collection with my pre -school brother and when seeing the cover of this book, he exclaimed: “This is the best!” I took that as a sign that it would be a fascinating reading, and it was. The art style is quirky and fits very nicely in the atmosphere of the story, giving the characters expressive faces or nice details on the pages that bring an element of realism for them.
The author made the story feel helpless on several points, from the work that had to be placed to maintain the ice rink to the repetition of restarting the next day. That helpless feeling brings commitment and intrigues into the general story.
The perseverance, determination and generosity that Brady exhibitions are admirable. I would recommend this story to extreme hockey lovers who would do that Also Spend days making a back garden hockey track in the ice cold.
