Florian Wirtz was first named German men’s football player of the year after a striking season 2024/25 with Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz scored 16 goals and was on 15 assists in 45 performances for Leverkusen last season, which encouraged a huge interest in his signature that Liverpool insured for £ 116 million.
The New No. 7 of Liverpool has already shown a glimpse why the club was convinced to make him the British record transfer, and his talent is recognized in his native Germany.
The annual vote, organized by the German Sports Magazine kickerWirtz saw 191 votes, for Michael Olise (81) from Bayern Munich, Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade (71) and Thomas Muller (70).
Members of the Association of German Sports Journalists (VDS) participated in the vote for a prize that has existed since 1960.
After receiving the prize, Wirtz said: “I accept this prize on behalf of all these people I owe something along the way.
“I am aware that at 22 I still have a lot of work for me to meet all the expectations that are accompanied by, among other things, the named football player of the year.
“And I will continue to set those expectations for myself, anyway.”
Last year’s winner Toni Kross was also asked to pass on his congratulations, and he greeted the 22-year-old and his decision to add to Liverpool this summer.
“I have to say, I could not imagine a better successor than you! You are a special player at so many levels,” said Kroos.

“In my opinion you have done everything well with your move to Liverpool FC, and it underlines your mindset and conviction.”
Wirtz, in addition to three Liverpool teammates, has also been named on the 30-man Ballon d’Or Shortlist for the 2025 Awards.
