Pep Guardiola has called Ruben Amorim a “top manager” after the Portuguese head coach was sacked by Man Utd on Monday.

Amorim was let go by the club following comments he made after a 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road in the Premier League on Sunday.

The 45-year-old insisted he was the team’s manager and not head coach, despite his official title, and hinted at disagreements behind the scenes.

Previewing the match between Manchester City and Brighton on Wednesday, Guardiola pointed out that managers will have less time in their positions after Chelsea also parted ways with Enzo Maresca last week.

“It’s a fact. Less time. Like what happened with Enzo,” he said.

“I cannot say anything out of respect for the players and the institutions of Chelsea and Manchester United.

“All I can say is that Ruben is a top manager. The decision was made by our neighbors, but I wish Ruben all the best for the future.”

Guardiola had sympathy for Amorim as the former Man Utd faced a string of absences due to injury and AFCON.

“If you don’t get results, it doesn’t matter,” he added. “The past or the present. Every manager is hired for his ideas and fired for his results.

“Sometimes you need a process and time. With United they draw three games at home against Everton and Bournemouth. Their opponents have done fantastic, but the results will be close to Arsenal.”

“The gaps are so small sometimes. In their last game, United had a lot of absences and sometimes it is difficult to deal with them. When important players are not available it is always difficult.”

“But the reason why? To be honest, I don’t know.”
