After a terrible season of 2024-25 that was littered with injuries and off-court struggles, the training camp for the New Orleans Pelicans and fans are pleased to see this team again.
A large part of the excitement for pelican fans that are on their way this season is because of Trey Murphy III. The regular NBA media, however, continues to sleep on Murphy III and his potential outbreak in star row this season.
The 25-year-old comes from a breakout season in 2024-25, where he had an average of 21.2 points per match, but people who follow the PELs see that there is clearly a different level for the game of Murphy III.
One of the keys to the outbreak of Murphy III this season is the departure of Brandon Ingram. With Ingram no longer in New Orleans, the shot volume of Murphy III will increase this season, and therefore his score production will only get better.
Now let’s assume that bi is gone, Murphy III can try 3.0 more three per game and make an average of 1.5 more three per game. This would add 4.5 more points per match to his average of last season, which brings its point per game average to 25.7.
Only 13 players last season had an average of 25 points per match or more, and all Murphy III may have to become a member of that group to get 2 to 4 more shots per night.
Despite the obvious signs that there is a breakout at the star level for Murphy III, he is still overlooked by the majority of the NBA media.
He will just have to prove them
It is no secret that the media were not a fan of the movements that Joe Dumars made in his first low season that was in charge of the Pelicans. Whether it was a valuable future first round pick to raise 10 places to set up Derik Queen, or it was traded for Jordan Poole, whose playing style did not always translate into winning, the media were not friendly to Dumars.
This dark cloud that floats over the pelicans is part of the reason that the outbreak of Murphy III is overlooked. With the NBA media that are so focused on the negatives with the Pelicans, it let them look completely past Murphy III and the outbreak that clearly comes from him.
The only thing that Murphy III can do to change this and let people talk about him is to do what Pelicans fans believe is inevitable, namely an outbreak at all-star level. If he can, heaven is the limit for this team.
