Former midfielder Paul Scholes has questioned the recruitment strategy of Manchester United after the signing sessions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
In the summer transfer window, United went to a desperate need to strengthen the attack and identified Mbeumo and Cunha as two of their primary goals. They signed the couple for a combined £ 133.5 million.
They started with the first three Premier League matches of Man United, but Mbeumo has been the striking player. The Cameroonian already has two goals, but his Brazilian counterpart still has to score for the club.
Scholes believes that Man United should not have signed the duo, because their arrival influenced the club in strengthening other important areas.
He told The overlap: “Taking two songs to dozens (Cunha and Mbeumo) was that really necessary? You think you have Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo can do that … If you have done that and wasted a little money and was unable to get a midfield player or a goalkeeper, is it not great recruitment, is it?
“I can’t make it better what many problems are in the team, which are two central midfield players, and the keepers are huge.”
Man United should have signed only one of Mbeumo and Cunha
Cunha and Mbeumo were brilliant in the competition last season, and they add more quality to the attack of Man United
However, the club should only have signed one of them, given that they have other players such as Mainoo, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee who can play in the role of number 10.
This would have enabled United to save enough money to pursue a movement for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba or a world-class goalkeeper.
While the Red Devils signed the young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens for yesterday’s deadline, there is no guarantee that he will be an upgrade to Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir because of his inexperience.
The goalkeeper department and the midfield trade are exposed in the opening of four games of Man United this season. Not signing quality players in those two positions can be expensive, even with the impact of Cunha and Mbeumo in the last third part.
