Patrick Kane Out for Red Wings Road Trip, Injury Could Be Worse Than Expected

The Detroit Red Wings will be without Patrick Kane for at least the next two games as the veteran forward continues to recover from an upper-body injury suffered last Friday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Head coach Todd McLellan confirmed this Tuesday that Kane will not travel with the team for their upcoming road trip as the Red Wings face the Buffalo Sabers and New York Islanders.

Kane, 36, was injured late in Detroit’s 2-1 win over Tampa Bay after losing an edge during the battle for the puck and crashing hard into the boards. He appeared to grab hold of his left side before slowly skating away. Although the initial belief was that the injury was not serious, The Grind Line Podcast now suggests it could be worse than first thought.

“He won’t make the trip,” McLellan said. “We will re-evaluate him before Saturday’s home game.” The Red Wings will host the St. Louis Blues this weekend, and Kane’s status for that game remains uncertain.

Patrick Kane Red Wings injury returns

The veteran winger already missed Sunday’s 4-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers, but Detroit has remained hot without him. The Red Wings have started the season with a 5-1 record and sit atop the Atlantic Division. With 10 points they are in third place in the league.

Kane, who re-signed with Detroit in June on a one-year deal worth $3 million, had found his groove again last year after offseason hip surgery. He had five points in five games before his injury.

For now, the Red Wings will proceed cautiously. Given Kane’s injury history and the long season ahead, Detroit doesn’t seem to be in a rush to bring him back before he’s fully ready. The hope is that reports that this injury is serious are inaccurate.
