I don’t have an excessive amount of screen time, but it’s definitely enough that spending three hours a day on ‘nothing’ isn’t justifiable.
One of my promises for the coming year, or promises and promises, rather exhortations to myself, is to
instead of scrolling, watching a documentary or reading something physical like a book or magazine.
Most importantly, it teaches or inspires me, in other words, the exact opposite of doomscroll.
The year has started strong, as it often does when you decide to make a change. I’ve already seen two incredible documentaries that really touched me.
Let’s see!

Ecce Homo and the last self-portrait
I remember Elizabeth Ohlson photos. I was a young teenager and was first exposed to the kind of raw honesty about sexuality, love and character that Elisabeth shared.
That what the documentary portrays a woman who never stops burning. That passion and fervor is similar to Marie-Louise Ekmans below and is actually not even a passion, it is more of a calling. Something that goes far beyond interests and driving forces.
There were certainly difficulties to live with
Elisabeth Ohlson, but I’m jealous because I’m close to the kind of creativity that really shines.
Without saying too much, it’s been a long time since I was moved to tears by an ending I made of this…
Excursions by Marie-Louise Ekman

Marie-Louise Ekman has been a clear favorite of mine for years. There is something about her clarity, freedom and the uncompromising honesty she possesses. Both in its creation and in relation to my own feelings that always touch me…
My dear blog colleague Jeanette wrote a warm and inspiring post this summer about his visit to Ekman’s exhibition at the Art Academy. I missed it myself, and I still regret it…
The documentary Excursions by Marie-Louise Ekmanwas released back in 2024, so many of you have probably seen it, but the cool thing is that you can see it
again and again and again…
“..Anneli Kustfält has followed the artist closely for two years as she returns to the studio and life as a freelance artist after her years at Dramaten. The documentary is a deep dive into an artistry characterized by courage, independence and an unwillingness to please..”
An unwillingness to please.
So liberating and wonderful to experience your days like this!
And there it is again, the feeling that arises every time I watch documentaries about passionate women.
A stubborn, almost restless desire to step into such a life yourself, whatever it is. I don’t know yet what it would mean for me, but maybe that’s exactly the point, that it might take a lifetime to understand.
