Of course, the son of an NBA hall from Famer opens, the doors that most children will never see opens. But Kiyan still had to meet expectations and dealing with immeasurable pressure that the average high school student could not even understand. Nothing was handed over to him. A good example: he was beaten from the All American Game of McDonald’s, in New York, so how did Kiyan react? Only by winning MVP among the Jordan Brand Classic, with 26 points and 5 rebounds in just 20 minutes. And for a good measure, he added 25 points in 21 minutes to take the People’s Choice Award home with the Allen Iverson Classic Game.
Nevertheless, Kiyan wrapped his basic career as the consensus top player in New York and now enters Syracuse as one of the most hyped recruits of the city in the recent memory.
“I am excited to play on a larger stage, for more fans, for more people, higher expectations, higher everything, just a step in that next level,” he says. “I feel that all the work we have applied will certainly be shown at that level. And I absolutely look forward to going into the dome and going into games, being ready to compete and win.”
For Melo this is unknown territory. He knows the Arena, the crowd, the bet – but now he will look from the sidelines. “I know what it’s like to get ready for a Georgetown game, or to get ready for a Villanova game, or Pittsburgh or St. John’s,” he says. “I know how the dome feels with 35,000 people there. He has not yet experienced that. I am enthusiastic about the unknown of how he will respond to it. He has to prepare for that. The game is the game – but it is also much that belongs to the game.”
Kiyan shares that sentiment and explains his own way of thinking: “On the field I want to be reminded at university if someone wins. I don’t want to go to university and be his [on] A losing team and has to worry about people transferring and things like that, “he says.” I just want to build a good brotherhood with my teammates and coaches and be able to go outside and win. I feel that when you go outside and win as a team, all the individual success comes afterwards. “
