More than 2.7 million households and companies will unlock a free broadband speed Boost in the coming days in moving experts will call experts on one of the greatest changes in the industry in years.
But not all houses are eligible to receive faster downloads and much more can miss their full advantage due to outdated equipment.
NBN Co will be launching Internet -upgrade Program, accelerate great, starting on Sundays for houses connected to the network with the help of fiber-to-the-premises and hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) technology.
The free upgrade program will increase downloading and uploading speeds for customers on three broadband plans, which affects around 2.77 million users.
Customers with 100 megabits per second plans will increase their download speeds to 500 Mbps, 250 Mbps plans will increase to 750 Mbps Downloads, while upload speeds double up to 100 Mbps on the fastest plans.
NBN Co will also launch a two gigabit per second download plan as part of the program, said Chief Executive Ellie Sweeney, in an attempt to stimulate the internet use of Australia.
“We are proud of delivering a reliable network at high speed and high-capacity to Australians and it is our investment in the network that enables us to accelerate great, as we say,” she said.
However, most Australian households are connected to broadband plans of 50 Mbps and should upgrade to receive the extra speed.
The speed boosts will be automatically delivered to eligible customers, said Vodafone Fixed Line Products General Manager Andy O’Connor, and will be an important change for broadband users.
“I call it a paradigm shift,” he said.
“It is really the biggest change in the market we have ever seen.”
More than half of the company’s internet users could receive the speed boost, he said, although some people could be briefly changed if they could not check connection options or check their hardware.
NBN users who do not have access to higher speeds must ask if they were eligible for a free upgrade of the fiber-to-the-premises, O’Connor said, while those who expect a speed boost should check whether their modem could deliver it.
“Not everyone’s home modem is currently able to go to that speed,” he said.
“Some older models are only able to go around 200 or maybe 250 megabits per second.”
Although the speed updates start on Sunday, upgrades can take a few days to take effect.
Australia currently stands 63rd in the world for fixed broadband speeds, according to the Global Index speed test, with an average download of 92 Mbps.
