In this latest update Air sports report that the U’s are keen to appoint him as their head coach at Kassam Stadium. They are said to have made ‘contact’ with the Irishman in the hope of closing a deal.
Oxford United have had a tough campaign so far and face a battle for survival in the second tier. They find themselves in the drop zone after 24 games, along with Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich City.
They are three points from safety behind Portsmouth in 21st place after their 1-0 defeat at home to Swansea City last time out. Next up is a tricky away trip to promotion hopefuls Ipswich Town on New Year’s Day as they look to return to winning ways.
Who is Oxford United target Alan Sheehan?
Oxford United could see Sheehan as someone who can lead them to safety. OUFC rose from League One in 2024 along with Portsmouth and Derby County, surviving the last campaign under Rowett.
Sheehan spent his playing days as a left back for Leicester City, Leeds United and Notts County, among others. He made 458 appearances and scored 30 goals before hanging up his boots in 2022.
The Athlone native began his coaching career at Oldham Athletic before joining Luton Town in 2022 as first-team coach under Nathan Jones, who now plays for Charlton Athletic. He later followed Jones to Southampton.
Sheehan was then appointed as Michael Duff’s number two at Swansea City in 2023. He later worked his way up to become their boss after Luke Williams was given the opportunity.
