With only two matches contested per club in the one-day event that was weekend three of the Senior British Clubs Leagues Premier Division, the clubs have a lot to play for in the final matches of the season, both at the top and bottom of the table.
Ormesby TTC, who have lifted the trophy twice in the last ten years, will be hoping to regain the prestigious title and prevent their nearest rival, Brighton TTC, from making history themselves as they hunt for a third successive title.
Ormesby were without David McBeath this weekend but unbeaten Enio Mendes was available for selection and was joined by Ben Piggott and Louis Price as they whitewashed Drumchapel Glasgow 7-0, who were without signing headliner Paul Drinkhall. Ormesby completed a perfect weekend, beating host Fusion TTC by the same scoreline. The only match to go the distance was between Louis Price and Fusion’s Shaquille Webb-Dixon, with the Ormesby man coming out on top 11-9 in the decider.
Brighton held on to the title with two wins from two, but not without a fight from Ormeau, who are at the other end of the table in the relegation battle. Ormeau came into the weekend with possibly the signing of the season, Par Gerell. The former 12-time Swedish national champion and multiple European medalist swept aside Felix Thomis and Igor Zavadksyi, but it wasn’t enough as Thomis secured victory for Brighton when he defeated Adam Faulkner in straight games.
Brighton also defeated Drumchapel Glasgow 4-3, but managed to secure victory when they were 4-1 up. Drumchapel’s points came from an impressive double for Aaron Mckibbin and Xinliang Sun’s victory over Thomis.
At the other end of the table, eBaTT narrowly lost to North Ayrshire, who could mathematically still be in the relegation battle despite being in fourth place. Despite eBaTT winning every match played thanks to a Patryk Dziuba double, with one player ineligible and Nahom Agedom’s walkover against Martin Johnson, the score reads 4-3 in favor of the Scottish team.
eBaTT also lost 4-3 to Ormeau, where Gerell once again stole the show despite finishing Dziuba, who also made an immediate impact in the division. The fixture went to the wire, where Faulkner defeated Olivier Chu.
BATTS’ Alexis Douin, undefeated in Britain for three seasons, saw his impeccable record tarnished by the hosts’ Larry Trumpauskas, who finished 3-2 at the top. Isaac Kingham defeated Trumpauskas 3-0 with a dominant performance in a replay of the U21 National Championships final to overturn that outcome. Webb-Dixon’s 12-10 in the fifth win, Abraham Sellado, meant the match went to a decider, with the score at 3-3, Kingham stepping up to beat Rikuto Morota 3-1.
North Ayrshire’s 4-3 win over BATTS saw them leapfrog Fusion, leaving the hosts in fifth place, level with the Scottish side. The return of Hugo Torngren for North Ayrshire helped the side overcome third-placed BATTS, with a win over Kingham and a narrow defeat to Douin 3-2. BATTS led 3-2 after Douin’s victory over Torngren, but an inspired performance from Colin Dalgleish to beat Kingham 12-10 in the fifth left a decider between Martin Johnson and England international Sellado. It was Johnson who came out on top 3-1 to secure the impressive victory.
Below you will find the latest updated standings, which leave the table in a very exciting position heading into the final weekend hosted by Ormesby on April 11, where the club could be crowned champions on home soil.
