The Orioles have released right -handed Matt BowmanAccording to the team’s official transaction page. Bowman was appointed earlier this week for an assignment, which marked the fourth time this season Baltimore had sent the right side to DFA Limbo.
This time, however, the O chose to just release Bowman instead of giving him the 40-man schedule. Bowman knew exemptions after his previous three DFAs and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A, although he had the opportunity to choose a free agency after one of those outright rights. It could be that this time the Orioles and Bowman have agreed to a release only to give Bowman a little more chance of quoting a competition before 31 August (the Postseason schedule eligible for deadline), or perhaps the O’s are ready to give up the 34-year-old.
Because Bowman no longer has a minor League options, his last few seasons have been a flurry of movements in and out of Rosters, with 59 1/3 total innings and 48 performances with five different teams since opening day 2023. His 4.10 ERA, 21.8k% and 5.5% walking percentage over 26 1/3 innings at Triple-a Norfolk has been better, even if his ERA is blown up by home runs. Bowman could possibly parlay these solid figures elsewhere in a different Minor League contract, and a return to the organization of Baltimore can probably not be excluded if Bowman cannot find a deal with a new club.
