There are no indications at this time that Doyle’s availability for Opening Day is in jeopardy. That probably won’t be known until he is re-evaluated. The two-time Gold Glove winner has a month to prepare for the start of the regular competition. The Rockies did not provide details on the severity.
Doyle wants to recover offensively after a difficult year. He hit .233/.274/.376 in 538 plate appearances, ranking among the bottom five hitters in the MLB in on-base percentage (min. 500 PAs). It was a disappointing follow-up to a more encouraging 2024 campaign. Doyle had hit 23 home runs and stolen 30 bases while hitting .260/.317/.446 two seasons ago. The slash was around the mean, taking into account the Coors Field effect.
If Doyle can get close to league average again on his own field, he would be a very valuable all-round player. He’s a good baserunner and, as the aforementioned hardware illustrates, one of the best defensive players in the sport. The Rockies received trade calls for the 27-year-old, but understandably had no interest in what would have been a sell-low trade this offseason. Doyle qualified for early arbitration as a Super Two player and earns a salary of $3.1 million. The Rockies have him under contractual control through the 2029 season.
A healthy Doyle will be Warren Schaeffer’s primary center fielder. If the injury is serious enough and impacts his availability in the regular season, the Rox would likely move the trade acquisition this offseason Jake McCarthy to the center. Jordan Beck, Mickey Moniac, Zac Veen And Tyler Vrijman could split the corner outfield work.
