Orioles Right -handed Albert Suárez is planned for an MRI tomorrow after an injury of a seasonal elbow wound, writes Roch Kubatko from Masnsports.com. That should determine whether the 35-year-old danger runs from any form of operation.
This was a lost year for Suárez, who had been a surprisingly valuable part of the Pitching Staff 2024. The Reisman started a season ago 24 of 32 performances and worked for a 3.70 ERA in 133 2/3 innings. Suárez started this year with long relief. After one performance he hurt his shoulder and was diagnosed with a rotatorm surchet that cost him for the next four months.
By the time Suárez returned in September, the Orioles were well out of battle. He made four performances and worked nine innings of two-run ball. Then came the elbow inflammation that hit him for the year and raises questions about his future. Suárez is eligible for arbitration for the first time in his career. MLBTR employees Matt Swartz projects him for a $ 900K salary. That is more than reasonable if the Orioles expect it to be healthy next season, but any form of serious injury can cause them to drop him from the 40-man schedule.
Suárez is one of the 14 Baltimore players who are eligible for arbitration. Ryan Mountcastle Has the highest projected salary of the group at $ 7.8 mm. It would be a surprise if the O’s return him for that amount after a season plagued by injuries. Mountcastle suffered a hamstring tribe of degree 2 at the end of May. That kept him on the wounded list outside the Trade Deadline. He was healthy for the last six weeks and cut .255/.293/.393 over 157 plate performances. He turned out in almost a third of his travels to the record.
The 28-year-old had also struggled early in the season. He closed the year with a .250/.286/.367 line while he hit seven homers in 89 games. The Orioles used him as a part-time player in the play, so that the daily first basework was given to the 23-year-old Coby May. Even if neither Mayo nor Rookie catcher/designated batter Samuel Basallo Had a good season, the Os will probably be looking for a cheaper lace -up bench to work behind those younger batters.
MountCastle recognized uncertainty about his future during the last weekend of the regular season (link via Rich Dubroff from Baltimore baseball). The pick of the third round of 2015 noted that he “cannot have control over things that happen” with the decision of the team, but the coaches and teammates praised with whom he worked in the organization during his decade. Baltimore will probably shop on the market, but they may have a hard time finding an interest in that arbitration salary. A more tender seems more likely. That would send him to a free agency and make him an interesting rebound candidate for clubs for a cheaper one-year-old deal.
Elsewhere in the setup, the O’s have a question mark in midfield. After Cedric Mullins was traded on the deadline, the Orioles played Colton Cowser in the middle. Although his defense figures in the small sample were acceptable, his average speed makes him better in the right field during a full season. Cowser had a terrible second half on the plate and hit .178/.263/.340 after the All-Star break. He missed time with a concussion and played through broken ribs that he suffered in June.
The O’s don’t have many internal alternatives. Dylan Beavers Exclusive played in the corner field as Rookie. He is an above -average runner who has some midfielder experience in the minors, but he played more right -handed field on the way through the system. Former first-rounder Enrique Bradfield Is a non-doubt midfielder who hit Double-A well, but he hit .179 in 15 games after a promotion in the late season to Triple-a Norfolk. He probably starts the year in the minors.
Jake Rill from MLB.com This morning suggested that the O’s should look for an external upgrade, ideally someone who hits from the right. Cowser, Beavers and Bradfield hit each left -handed. Harrison Bader Fits that account in the free agency, but he has to sign somewhere that the daily playing time offers at least a strong contract of two years. They could add a fourth/fifth outfielder Jose Siri On a cheap annual deal or search for a glove-first complementary type on the trade market. Tyrone Taylor (Mets), Jacob Young (Nationals), Blake Perkins (Brewers) and Dane Myers (Marlins) are a few speculative glove-first options that should not require a huge prospect if the O that route goes.
