The issue of illegal vehicle license plates in Malaysia now has a new dimension, with motorized number plate flippers that introduce the comparison. When installed on a vehicle, a number plate flipper can hide or exchange the registration number of a vehicle in an instant via remote control. According to the report, checks on three popular e-commerce websites showed that these devices are being sold for between RM150 and RM350.
At least one dozen sellers advertise on these devices for all weather conditions, which are made of metal and plastic and can be installed in two variations in two minutes. They are sold with accessories, including installation and power cables, control units and user indicators.
One version uses a built -in engine to rotate the original registration plate in a counterfeit number on request, while another lowers an empty panel or shutter to completely hide the original number plate.
In one of the advertisements, the device is promoted as a means to protect vehicle registration plates against damage due to weather conditions or rough road surfaces, while it also offers improved security and privacy by easily hiding the car license plate when needed. In another advertisement on another platform, the device is advertised as “license plate coverings to prevent camera cards.”
According to Federal Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Director thatuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri, motorists who are caught with such devices installed on their vehicles will confront with strict action, because it is a violation number to give a vehicle number again.
He said that perpetrators can be charged for displaying a vehicle registration plate in a misleading way or one that is incorrect under section 108 of the Road Transport Act, and they can imprisonment of a maximum of one year or a fine of a maximum of RM5,000 or both if convicted.
“We will seize each vehicle that is found with such a mounted device. The owner will also be fined and the court action will be given in accordance with the law,” he told the news publication, adding that enforcement will be carried out via special operations. He added that the police will hold discussions with the domestic trade and costs of living (KPDN) and digital ministries about prohibiting the sale of such devices.
Criminologist that Seri A. ThaiveEegan said that the sale of such devices should be seriously investigated, because it undermines the enforcement of traffic inacturators and impedes the pursuit of criminals by the police. “The necessary changes must be made to the relevant laws to ban the import, local production, storage and installation of the device,” said the former Penang Chief Police Officer.

The law said that although some people can buy these products from novelty, their primary use remains to hide someone’s identity and avoid the accountability while driving. He said that the sale and use of Bord-Flipping devices could have wide consequences. “Traffic enforcement systems, such as cameras used to check speed, red lights and tolls, will be seriously affected, making violations possible,” he said.
In addition to financial losses by unpaid tolls and forfeited fines, he said that such devices can also hinder the investigation of more serious crimes, whereby further challenges for law enforcement agencies would be set. “Widespread use will certainly endanger confidence in traffic regulations that are performed fairly and responsible, which leads to a reduced general compliance with the law,” he noted.
Transport adviser Wan Agyyl Wan Hassan said that the problem is not only about prohibiting such devices, but also about stopping their availability online. “The Road Transport Act 1987 and JPJ regulations make it a violation to cover up, change or mess around a registration plate.
He said that the devices entail serious risks, because criminals could commit theft, smuggling or hit-and-run accidents and disappear at the push of a button. “The enforcement of traffic will collapse if drivers can hide from cameras and tolls, making roads more dangerous. The public trust in the rule of law would erode if some drivers get away-free compared to those who follow the rules,” he said.
He said that the devices are openly available, despite the consumer regulations. “According to the regulations of the consumer protection (electronic commercial transaction) 2024 and the online safety bills, platforms are obliged to remove prohibited products as soon as they are marked. Authorities can hold them responsible. If platforms can ignore task goods, they can also remove the maps,” he said.
