TAMPA – The worst thing that ever happened to Jasson Domínguez is being nicknamed “The Martian.” The best could turn out to be teammates with Amed Rosario.
There is “very good player potential” in Domínguez. An All-Star Game or two, potentially for 20-20 players. But probably not ‘The Martian’. But that nickname, and the heady comparisons that arose when the Yankees gave him nearly all of their international pool money in 2019, created an otherworldly anticipation that only grew when he homered in his first MLB at-bat of 2023 off Justin Verlander en route to Cooperstown.
Less than two weeks later, Domínguez had to undergo Tommy John surgery. That led to a phase of disrupted development, erratic play, hints of an advantage and revelations of problems in the field and batting from the right, culminating in his development from starter to mainly a bench player in the final two months of last season.
That coincides with Rosario’s arrival in a trade from Washington last July. He brought a needed right bat that hit lefties, versatility and enthusiasm. For Domínguez he brought much more. Because who could better understand Domínguez’s lineage? After all, Rosario was the can’t-miss prospect as a superstar in New York… who missed.
