The Edmonton Oilers may not yet have the next contract by Connor McDavid, but there is little feeling of panic in the organization – or among fans. The team, the fans, and the most important thing, Connor is all pretty calm when it comes to his deal that is being done, which seems strange, given the size of his decision.
Speaking with Jeff Marek, Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson explained Why the atmosphere around the expansion of McDavid is so relaxed. The biggest factor? McDavid’s clear and consistent dedication to Edmonton. “He is very pronounced about how much he loves the city, likes to play for this team,” said Jackson. “The team is good and he is happy to win.” Jackson noted that it could be different if various factors were not in the game, but they are. The most important thing is that the team is good and winning is of the utmost importance for the captain of the oilers.
“I think when Connor is ready … we will have the discussion and we will get a deal”

Jackson explained that if the oilers were struggling or held in a rebuilding, the conversation would feel much different. But with back-to-back deep playoff runs and a selection that remains an elite of the competition, the environment is one in which McDavid believes-and one that gives the organization confidence, a deal will come together without a drama.
The relationship between McDavid, the city and team leadership also plays an important role. Jackson, who has known McDavid for years, emphasized the strong trust between the superstar and the franchise. “Connor has a lot of faith in the staff, owned – in everything,” he said. He noted that ownership Connor and Lauren dealt well.
There is really no good reason to leave.
Why is this so different from the expansion of Leon Draisaitl?
Jackson has a comparison with a Leon Draisaitl extension from Leon Draisaitl last summer, who generated much more noise and speculation, that the McDavid process would be simple. There was no panic about Draisaitl, but Jackson remembers that people told him that he should trade the attacker if he had not signed. Jackson was not sure why people were so worried. He was always sure that Leon would register to stay.
With McDavid, now knowing that Draisaitl has already committed, his decision may be even easier. Moreover, not much will be back and forth. “It will not be like other negotiations,” he explained. “When Connor is ready, we have the discussion and we get a deal.”
For now, the oilers are aimed at the coming season, convinced that the future of their captain is safe in more than one way – even if the paperwork is not yet.
