The annual center rankings of the NHL have become a source of debate in the hockey world, and this summer they have fueled a surprising story: Auston Matthews is no longer considered a top three center in the competition. On many lists he is not even in the top five.
The crew of Tsn override I have received a discussion about the recent lists and how far them is now. Hayes said: “It is quite clear that there is a community, maybe it is a majority of the NHL who looks at him and says,” What have you, man? “
At one point it was a debate if Matthews or McDavid was better. Now it’s not even close. Matthews is not even considered to be almost two or three players on the list that are now above him.
Where did it go wrong for Matthews?
Once seen as the nearest challenger of Connor McDavid for supremation in the middle, Matthews slipped behind names such as Nathan Mackinnon, Leon Draisaitl, Aleksander Barkov, Sidney Crosby and even Jack Eichel. The justification often amounts to one simple factor: play -off success.
While Matthews is a generation seeker who poured 69 goals only two seasons ago, his recent Play -Off CV’s critics have questioned his place under the elite of the competition. Four goals in his last 18 postseason competitions – in combination with the collapse of Toronto in the second round of last year – only fueled the story.
That said, this ‘lack of respect’ can be exactly what Matthews needs. Unfortunately, Matthews has not been the kind of player who responds well to the pressure. Dave Feschuk in fact said that Matthews has often worn as if he was above the criticism.
Can Matthews take this personally and let it work?
Great players have been thriving for a long time on observed lights, and for Matthews, analysts and experts are about the same as they have been in his career at any time. All still think he is a great player and few expect him to fall from a cliff, but he must respond to those who look him out. That can be more difficult now that Mitch Marner has disappeared.

The talent of Matthews cannot be denied and his defensive game competes in every center in hockey. Hayes argued that when Matthews is at his best, he is able to tilt the ice as much as McDavid or Mackinnon. The issue is consistency in high-stakes moments of the stage in which his colleagues have cemented their estates.
From Barkov who leads Florida to a Stanley Cup, to Eichel’s Breakout -Run with Vegas, the centers ranked for Matthews, all have play -off moments to point to. McDavid and Draisaitl have, although they have not yet won the cup, historically clamped in play -off games and have come twice extremely close. Matthews has not shown any signs that he can take his team everywhere.
If he chooses to embrace the criticism, Matthews could set up for a sample season. He starts his first years and there is no better time and place than this season. A superstar would use these rankings as a persona bulletin board material and respond by trying to hunt the throat of his no -sayer.
In many ways it is for him to remind the hockey world how good he can be if he wants to be.
