While round three of the Carabao Cup ends tonight, Newcastle United returns to action in the competition, six months after their historical triumph in Wembley last season.
To mark 65 years of the iconic competition, the EFL has unveiled a special update for the sleeve badges that have been designed to honor the history of the cup and to recognize the historical victory of the Magpies under the arch.
The new sleeve badges, in Carabao’s trusted Green, will now contain a nod to the number of times every club has won the competition.
As holders, Newcastle also wears the very first Carabao Cup Gold Badge, with the number one.
The men of Eddie Howe get their defense by 2013 finalists Bradford City in St James’ Park on Wednesday, with the Newcastle boss enthusiastically for a new good run in a competition that brought so much joy last season.
In his club in his press conference before the competition, Howe said: “The experiences we have experienced in the competition, not only last year, but two seasons ago, were memorable to say the least. They are some of my strongest memories.
“The whole experience of the competition is great, and because you go into it early in the season, it has a freshness. We are against heavy opponents.
“They are doing very well in their competition, are on a strong winning run and have defeated two championship teams [Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City] To get to this point. “
He admitted that coming in when holders felt extra special, but not naive about how difficult the early rounds can be.
How added: “It has a nice feeling about it. It is something that we recognize, and we want to respect that by trying to do our best to go on a new good run.
“As we found last year, the early rounds are very difficult. We played Wimbledon, a 1-0 victory, and it was a tough match. It was the same two years ago when we kneaded together against Tranmere and we fully respect every opponent.
“You just try to find a way, and we will try to do.”
