In December, prosecutors charged 26-year-old Shaka Fagans with attempted murder for allegedly shooting two men in 2022. Both victims in that case are unindicted suspects in the 2021 killing of Bert Brigham III, a fatal shooting that Oakland police attributed to a feud between two rival gangs in East Oakland, court records show.
One suspect in Brigham’s murder, 25-year-old Hanif McLeod, was arrested last month and charged with murder. Authorities allege that after Brigham was killed, Fagans attempted to kill two of the men he believed were responsible.
Brigham was fatally shot in the 1900 block of Foothill Boulevard in Oakland on July 18, 2021 around 10 p.m. The two unindicted suspects were shot almost exactly a year later, on July 27, 2022, on the 2400 block of 12th Avenue.
After the 2022 shooting, police allege Fagans had a conversation with one of the men he shot at, who explained that Brigham was not the intended target. Police have linked other non-fatal shootings to the same feud, according to court records.
Fagans was released from jail after posting $150,000 bail, court records show. He was initially charged with possessing weapons and ammunition as a felon, but those charges were dropped in January before he was released from prison, records show.
