The foal in question is Lot 162 at the Australian Pacing Gold auction in Melbourne on February 15. He is a father of the capricious Show LANAIHAI from the Art Major mare Amity’s Girl.
The Toulmin’s bought Amity’s Girl as a broodmare at an auction in Shepparton about seven years ago. She comes from a South Australian family with whom both Alan Galloway Snr and Jnr have had huge success over the years.
Stars such as Bag Limit, Armchair Ride, Yarracoola, Come On Frank and more recently Loucasso all belong to this family.
Show LANAIHAI may sneak under the radar of many owners and trainers, but there is no reason why he couldn’t be a very successful stallion. His breeding is impeccable as a son of the great Somebeachsomewhere, while his mother, the American Ideal mare Obahma Joy, won $180,000 on the track.
Soho Lanikai made his debut as an early two-year-old on February 8, 2020 in the Premiere Stakes at Melton and what a debut it was. After being parked for most of the journey, the driver shook the reins at the 400 and Lanikai put 65 meters on his rivals in the blink of an eye – with a score of 1:54. Unfortunately it was his only race start, as a fibrillation problem prevented his return to the track in the following two seasons.
Lanikai subsequently retired as a stud and from the first small crop of just twelve foals (three-year-olds by 2025) he has produced six winners, including the bright youngster Captain Moore 1:50.6, who is now racing very successfully in the US and has $112,479 to his name to date.
With that in mind Lot 162 is definitely worth a closer inspection. There are only 36 pacing stallions in the Melbourne auction eligible for the $100,000 APG Victorian 2YO Final in 2027. As such, these are incredible opportunities to compete for that money if you buy the right colt.
The colt’s father was a freakish two-year-old and there are some champion two-year-olds in his pedigree. Sounds like a recipe for success!
