NZ vs WI 2025: Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer rewrite history in narrow defeat

New Zealand may have won the third T20I of the ongoing five-match series against the West Indies, but not before Romario Shepherd and Shamar Springer putting on a show with the bat. The Kiwis eventually held on to secure a nine-point win at the Saxton Oval in Nelson.

The duo of Shepherd and Springer put on 78 off just 39 balls for the ninth wicket to make the chase deep. This partnership was the highest for the ninth or tenth wicket in a T20I involving full-member sides. The score ended when Springer was dismissed on the last delivery of the penultimate over.

Talking about the match, where they opted to bat first, the hosts scored 177/9 in their quota. After a few low scores on the trot, stump batsman Devon Conway finally got going and scored a half-century (56 off 34). Daryl Mitchell powered his way through to a 24-ball 41. However, the last six in the order all registered single-figure scores. Matthew Forde was the bowlers’ choice with 2/20 in four overs.

Although West Indies got off to a good start on the power play, but things quickly fell apart after that. They were reduced to 88/8 midway through the 13th. Shepherd, batting on 13, was joined in the middle by Springer. They started their attack and almost got the Windies over the finish line.

The fourth T20I was played today (November 10) at the same venue but was canceled due to rain. The fifth and final match will be played in Dunedin on November 13. In the final match of the series, the home team go into the match with a 2-1 lead, while the visiting team has an excellent chance to draw. The three-match ODI leg follows the T20I series, after which three Tests will be played in December.
