New Zealand has suffered a setback for their three-match T20i series against Australia, with a captain of the White ball Mitchell Santner excluded after abdominal surgery. Michael Bracewell will come in as a captain of a 14-person team with Pacers Kyle Jamieson and Ben Sears. New -Zeeland will also miss the wounded pace -duo of Lockie Ferguson (Hamstring) and Adam Milne (Voet).
Santner had undergone abdominal surgery last month and was initially hopeful to return for the series. However, he did not fully recover to make the cut.
“Never nice to lose your skipper. But these things do happen. And Michael has already been the leader of this team and has done an excellent job against Pakistan. So complete confidence in how he will lead the team,” said coach Rob Walter from New Zealand.
The team is further exhausted with Will O’Rourke (Back), Glenn Phillips (Lies) and Finn Allen (Voet) not available for the first home series of New Zealand of the season. Kane Williamson has also unsubscribed, but is expected to return for the White-Ball series against England.
Jamieson and Sears make their return after missing the Zimbabwe Tri series in July. Jamieson was not available because of the birth of his first child, while Sears recovered from a side voltage. The head coach welcomed the return of Sears in full fitness.
“He has worked incredibly hard for the past 12 weeks to be back in the park and having done a great job there. So we are enthusiastic to see him back in the competitive fold. We are building a larger base of fast bowlers, because we understand that the program is so busy nowadays, but quickly bowling is an important requirement for performance. So we want to be sure that we have” said Walter.
Santner’s absence ensures that ISH Sodhi retains its place. The Legspinner made an impression in Zimbabwe and took 2 for 34 and 4 for 12 in his two outings before he missed the last game. Devon Conway, who recently signed a casual play agreement, also holds his place. New Zealand is confronted with a strong Australian side fresh from back-to-back T20i series victories.
“[They play a] Very aggressive brand that is cool. I think that puts you under pressure. It certainly enables us to explore a few different options about how we want to play against them, because it looks like they come up with a very specific way they want to play. So it’s a nice test, “said Walter.
Australia will be for the upcoming T20i series without three of their first-choice players. Pat Cummins Is excluded because of a hotspot in his lower back, Nathan Ellis will miss the Tour to be home before the birth of his first child, and Cameron Green has remained back to play first-class cricket for Western Australia, where he will bowling for the first year in the preparation of the Ashes series last year. Mitchell Starc, who withdrew from T20i Cricket, will also not occur, although he has not played for Australia since the 2024 World Cup.
The T20i series is played on Mount Maunganui on 1, 3 and 4 October.
