Connor McDavid will start the 2025–26 season under the last year of his current contract, and from now on no new deal has been completed. Pierre Lebrun from TSN Said that McDavid will light his agent green when McDavid is ready, but that has not happened yet, and it cannot happen in the course of the following month.
According to the NHL Insider, discussions between McDavid, his agent and team management in the early stages, are exchanged without concrete numbers. When the two parties are ready for that part, this is a five -minute discussion. Until that time everyone waits.
The superstar of the oilers was eligible for a new contract on 1 July, but nobody expected that he would sign at that time. Many knew this would take a few weeks. The surprise now seems to be that things keep going. Lebrun hinted that McDavid will probably start the season under his current deal. Until it is comfortable, the Yardage markings do not move.
The agent of McDavid, the attacker and oilers management all make it clear that discussions will only continue when McDavid is comfortable to continue to the next phase. Whether that happens before Camp Puck Drop, or it does not happen at all, is the big question. The hope is for an early resolution, but Lebrun says that this is not about figures. The point is to find a path that works for both parties.
For now, all that the oilers can do, are ready and keep open lines of communication strong. There is optimism that an agreement can still be reached before the season starts, but everyone seems to be preparing for things that drag out a little longer. Fans must expect things to take more time. Nothing is on hands.
