NYRA is taking a leading role in the CAW fight

Give credit where it’s due. The New York Racing Association just announced a meaningful, concrete step to rein in the CAW-driven opportunity chaos – and it matters.

As of February 5, CAW activity is required stop after one minute to post to all pools not yet limited. That’s not lip service. That’s a guardrail. And it directly addresses the late-stage odds volatility that has frustrated retail players for years.

NYRA already led the way in 2021 by increasing CAW access to the win pool after two minutes to posta policy that has noticeably reduced the latest price shocks. Now they’re expanding that philosophy – smart and comprehensive – to other pools. The stated goal is price transparency and a better betting experience. NYRA also banned CAWs from the late Pick 5 and Pick 6. Here the action is supported by the words.

This is the part that deserves extra recognition: NYRA owns an interest in Elite Turf Club. That makes this step even more important. It would have been easy to look the other way. Instead, NYRA opted for it come into balancenot just handling.

Is this the final solution to the CAW problem? No. But it is one positive, measurable step toward leveling a playing field that has been lopsided for too long. Progress in this sport usually comes one centimeter at a time. This was a solid inch, maybe more.

Well done, NYRA. This is what leadership looks like.
