Beauty Is Blind storms home for 50th career win

Beauty is blind (Better than cheddar) closed from seventh going into the final turn to dramatically record her 50th career victory in an optional harness racing event at Rideau Carleton Raceway on Sunday, November 30.

Beauty Is Blind shot into the three-hole early in the $6,000 event, with the parked Blackjack Soleil (Eric Beausoleil) hanging outside leader Red Cape Party (Daniel St. Pierre) in a quarter of :28.1 over the course labeled ‘good’. Further action started in front of the stands when Pascal Berube pulled Beauty Is Blind behind Blackjack Soleil, prompting both Alwaysyourway (Robert Shepherd) and Latte Seelster (Stephane Pouliot) to swing three-wide around her, and the field raced in three lines past the half in 1:00.1.

Beauty Is Blind stepped around the fading Blackjack Soleil to approach three-quarters in 1:28.4 and briefly formed the third over before tapping three high again to begin her attack. She was the widest of the five in a Battle Royale further down the track, and she was fastest home, surging in the final meters to triumph in 1:59.2. Alwaysyourway was a brave second after an exhausting journey. Red Cape Party came third.

The eight year old Beauty is blind achieved a half-century of victories in her 177th start and increased her total earnings to $254,794. Marc-Andre Simoneau conditions the daughter of Better than cheddar-Fast Ruffles and co-owns her with Desjardins Noreau Stable of Quebec City, Que. and fellow Trois-Rivieres, Que. resident Jean Fontaine. The mare returned $12.30 to win.

Exotic Sand tried his best to extend his winning streak to seven in the final, an optional claimer with an $8,000 purse. The John MacMillan trainee had the gold seat behind leader PL Rinchenia (Herder) through :28.4, :58.4 and 1:27.1 fractions and took the lead into the stretch. The leader’s resistance lasted until the end, as Exotic Sand made a final charge to move up half a length in 1:56. Thrilling Times (William Roy) finished third, five lengths behind PL Rinchenia.

Exotic sand is undefeated since moving to Rideau in October for MacMillan of Odessa, Ont., who partnered with 2099551 Ontario Inc. from Greely, Ont. owns the seven-year-old. The son of American Ideal-Jus Chilln Out recorded his 23rd lifetime victory in 102 starts and has now earned $174,650. His winning price was $2.50.

Rideau organized retirement ceremonies for a pair of 14-year-olds, National Debt and Silverado, both long-time fighters at the Ottawa, Ontario, circuit.

National Debt was recognized in the winners circle after the fourth race. The son of Allamerican Native-Our Inheritance has been a fixture in the Rideau Preferred ranks for the past eight years for owner Francois Morin of Beauceville, Que. National Debt made the trip to the winner’s circle with Morin, Yves Tessier, who was the horse trainer when he was with Rideau, and regular driver Pascal Berube for the presentation. The stallion had a record of 93 wins from 289 starts and earned $778,939. He played 133 times at Rideau, mostly at the Preferred level, and won 55 times on the circuit. The National Debt Retirement Ceremony

The connections of Silveradowho is recovering from stable rest after an injury, received a presentation after the first race. Owner-trainer Wayne Laviolette and family were on hand to receive the blanket, carrots and sign. Laviolette owned the Mach Three-Armbro Velor gelding throughout his career and trained him for almost a brief period in the US in 2017. The gelding retires with 32 wins and $278,808 in earnings in 278 starts. He rode Rideau 219 times with 27 victories.
