Nutrien Tasmanian Yearling Sale builds momentum

With the Nutrien Tasmanian Yearling Sale just a month away, anticipation is rapidly building as the industry counts down to February 14. A total of 36 yearlings will go under the hammer at Quercus Park, near Launceston, offering buyers a catalog of options to suit every budget.

One of Tasmania’s most prominent suppliers is Brooke Hammond, who will present a draft of four yearlings – two colts and two fillies – headlined by Lot 36, a standout colt by Sweet Lou, recently crowned Australian champion sire.

Blueblood Colt leads the draft

Lot 36 is out of the Art Major mare Wicked Nights, dam of New Zealand star We Walk By Faith, a three-time Group 1 winner who has already collected $532,322 and continues to rise.

The colt’s second dam, the In The Pocket mare Twice As Hot, produced Flaming Flutter, winner of 30 races including the Group 1 SA Derby, multiple Country Cups and heats of the Inter Dominion. The family also includes Cyclone Banner, a prolific performer with 48 career wins, 33 of which came in North America.

Hammond’s second colt is by Ride High, second on the First Season Sires list, by eight-time winner Elect To Go. This colt has a close relationship with Pachacuti, winner of 35 races, including the Group 3 Globe Derby Stakes as a three-year-old.

Two well-related fillies are also offered

Hammond’s fillies include Lot 2, by Downbytheseaside out of Ashuras Beau, dam of Hungry Hippo, winner of both the Prelude and Final of the $75,000 Globe Derby. This filly also comes from the family of two-time Interdominion champion Beautide.

Her other filly is a daughter of Ride High out of Sheas Delight, dam of five-time winner Strandard Lollipop, who was placed at Group level as a three-year-old. This filly goes back to the family of Ananz, the former Australian 2YO of the Year, who won 30 races – including an impressive 17 out of two.

Bonuses and eligibility add extra appeal

All four of Hammond’s yearlings are eligible for Tasbred and Vicbred, and all graduates of the sale are eligible for a $5,000 bonus upon recording their first win as a two-year-old, providing an added incentive for buyers targeting early stock.

Online catalogs are now available via the Standard nutrients website.
