Suryakumar Yadav, the current Team India T20I skipper and the veteran Mumbai Indians batsman who has been playing for the Mumbai state team for several seasons now, has been lacking form of late, which also raised doubts about his rise to the captaincy.

Instead, Mumbai have named their bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur as the new T20I captain. He was earlier named skipper for the Ranji Trophy season after Ajinkya Rahane stepped down.
Shardul Thakur has experience playing for India and has been part of the Mumbai squad for over a decade; this time he has also been traded to Lucknow Super Giants’ MI camp ahead of the mini-auction.
Shivam Dube, CSK’s great all-rounder who has recently emerged as a special player for India with the ball, has also been included in the Mumbai squad. Youngsters Raghuvanshi and Ayush Mhatre have also been included in the squad and will play alongside the experienced Ajinkya Rahane.
The likes of Suryansh Shedge and Musheer Khan are mentioned as the spin bowling all-rounders, while Sams Mulani and Tanush Kotian will be the leading spinners. Skipper Thakur is likely to lead the pace bowling deck along with Tushar Deshpande.

Mumbai are ruling the Ranji Trophy under the captaincy of Shardul Thakur.
Ajinkya Rahane decided to step down as captain ahead of the start of the Ranji Trophy season in 2025-26. The Mumbai Cricket Association then named all-rounder Shardul Thakur as the new captain for their Ranji Trophy season.
Although Shardul Thakur could not perform as consistently with the ball or the bat after being made captain, the team has performed convincingly under his leadership. Under his leadership, Mumbai have won three matches and are unbeaten with 24 points this season.
