John Tavares praises Easton Cowan’s continued growth after assisting on the equalizer vs. Blue Jackets
“Our game is getting better and better,” Tavares said. “We did a lot of good things, especially in the first half of the game. Then they were able to capitalize and make some good plays and go ahead by two. It was hard-fought and our play was better, but obviously you don’t end up on the right side.”
“I think he’s come a long way,” Tavares said. “His ability to read the play and make little plays, just like he did on my goal. He just puts it in, not too fast, just in the right spot at the right pace, just an easy play for me to put in. And he looks stronger on the puck, absorbs contact, things like that. You saw it all game and I thought it was evident in overtime as well. He’s playing really well and it’s a credit to him that he hasn’t tried to do too much or overextend himself focused.” attacking things, but just trying to be consistent with his game in all areas.”
Thursday night’s goal showed the chemistry the rookie and veteran have built together, with Cowan getting more opportunities amid a series of injuries. Tavares spoke after the game about their growing relationship on the ice.
“It was good,” Tavares said. “When we’ve played together, there’s been some good moments and we’ve had the opportunity to play off each other. Understand where the open space is, where the puck is going and how we can support each other. Yeah, he’s obviously a very talented kid.”
Cowan, Tavares and the Maple Leafs travel to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.
