Not such a small deal for the Maple Leafs as Rasmus Andersson is back on Trade Radar

Not such a small deal for the Maple Leafs as Rasmus Andersson is back on Trade Radar

Trade speculation surrounding Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson is flaring up again, and the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly part of the conversation. According to TSN’s Pierre LeBrunToronto has revisited discussions about Andersson as the market for top-four defensemen tightens following Minnesota’s acquisition of Quinn Hughes.

With Toronto struggling and playing Troy Stecher more than 20 minutes a night, it has become clear that they could use some help from the blue line, and if Andersson goes elsewhere, the Maple Leafs may be left with few options.

With few impact blueliners expected to be available between now and the trade deadline, Andersson’s name has quickly resurfaced. Noting that Toronto’s interest is not new, LeBrun explained that the Maple Leafs have long viewed the Flames defenseman as a strong fit.

“Among the teams that have opted out of Rasmus Andersson are the Toronto Maple Leafs,” LeBrun reported, adding that the club previously explored a deal around last season’s deadline.

Complicating matters is Andersson’s contract status. He will become an unrestricted free agent this summer, leaving Calgary with a choice to make. As LeBrun put it: “What will be interesting is how the Flames handle that potential transaction. Do they move it as a traditional rental? Or do they involve agent Claude Lemieux in a potential sign-and-trade to get more value?”

That possibility is especially relevant for Toronto. LeBrun added that the Leafs are seen as one of the teams Andersson may be open to expanding with, should a trade materialize.

There’s a not-so-small problem for the Maple Leafs

However, TSN’s Darren Dreger suggested Toronto remains cautious. While acknowledging Andersson’s (or any other top-four defenseman’s) call, Dreger pointed out that the Leafs are waiting for prices to soften as more sellers may enter the market. “They need more vendors in the market, and right now that’s not the case,” he said.

There is also an internal debate about priorities. Dreger noted that Toronto isn’t entirely convinced that a top-four defenseman is its most pressing need. He suggests a top-line winger could be a bigger boost, especially if he helps Auston Matthews rediscover his scoring touch.

With limited resources and multiple needs, general manager Brad Treliving is faced with a familiar balancing act: deciding whether Andersson is worth the cost, or whether upfront help should be prioritized. It doesn’t seem like the Leafs can do both things, assuming they can even do one.
