National highways to resolve fines for incorrect speeding violations

Many of us have certainly been caught speeding, only to swear we were driving slower. But there is the evidence, in black and white: the speed limit and the speed of your vehicle, complete with you at the wheel (usually). An open and shut case. With the exception of around 2,650 recent cases where variable speed limits and cameras were out of sync, meaning drivers have been flashed despite their speed being legal for the changed limit. A delay meant the cameras didn’t get up to speed in time (pun intended, sorry).

It’s an anomaly being investigated by National Highways, and a resolution seems likely soon. Although only 10 per cent of the ‘Strategic Road Network’ (England’s motorways and major motorways) are said to have been affected, and given that that figure of 2,650 represents fewer than two faults per day since the problem was first identified from 2021 onwards, it obviously won’t feel like a minor issue to affected motorists.

Especially when it comes to points, courses and more money in insurance premiums. In a statement, National Highways said any fines will be refunded and points ‘removed from their license where relevant’; Anyone affected by the strobe flash will be contacted directly. And maybe buy a festive lottery ticket if you’re one of the lucky ones.

Chief Executive of National Highways, Nick Harris, said: “Safety is our top priority and we have developed a solution to this technical anomaly to maintain the highest level of safety on these roads and ensure no one is wrongfully prosecuted. All drivers should continue to observe posted speed limits as normal. Anyone affected will be contacted by the relevant police.” So don’t think that the dreaded flash could be a mistake next time; If all goes well, this will be the last heard of it…
