The Indian dynamic batter of the Middle Order Shreyas Iyer has made a surprising revelation where he called the Mumbai Indians as his favorite side until he himself resorted to play in the IPL and also praised the Punjab Kings coach Ricky Ponting for the unimaginable success of the team in IPL 2025.

In the podcast, when the host asked which team he had supported as a young boy before he started playing the IPL himself, which he started in 2015 for the Capitals in Delhi. Shreyas had a very unexpected reaction, because he put all three teams he has represented in the IPL so far offside.

Shreyas Iyer praises the synergy between PBKS players in IPL 2025
The Punjab Kings missed their first IPL title for the second time in the history of the IPL. This was also their second season as IPL finalists after IPL 2024. Shreyas and Ponting were previously linked to the Delhi Capitals to also lead them to the final.

Iyer Credits Coach Ricky Ponting for the success of PBKS in the IPL season
Shreyas Iyer had a quirky mention of Ponting as a great coach, while he completely discredited Gautam Gambhir, who was his mentor in the IPL 2024, which he won. This also hinted to the big band of Iyer with Ponting since their Delhi days, and a possible tense relationship with Gambhir.
“Once you have a good coach, a positive coach, I think it is his job to get all players together and to build that form of companionship,” Shreyas mentions the importance of the role of a coach in the team.
“I felt this year when Ricky Ponting came in like the PBKS head coach, he made everyone comfortable; he made everyone feel that they belonged to the team and was open and honest about what he said,” huge praise for Ricky Ponting by Shreyas Iyer.
“So once you have received that kind of feedback from your coach, that you can come back and perform on the best of your skills, you are confident enough and in the back of your head you feel very comfortable in the dressing room,” concluded Shreyas on Ponting.
