Nico O’Reilly was able to make his senior England debut later this month after receiving his first call-up as a replacement for Reece James.
The 20-year-old Starlet in Manchester City was promoted from the team under 21 on Monday morning after the Captain of Chelsea had withdrawn, despite playing the full 90 minutes in Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool.
O’Reilly started his career as an attack -oriented midfielder, but was largely deployed in left back under Pep Guardiola. All nine of his performances for the city so far have been in that position this season.
He is one of the four players who can play left back in the newest England team of Thomas Tuchel for upcoming matches against Wales and Latvia-but two of the other three options, than Burn and Djed Spence, are by nature with the right reach.
That is why this can be a sincere opportunity for O’Reilly to establish himself as first-choice Understudy for Myles Lewis-Skelly if he impresses Tuchel in the coming days.
Nico O’Reilly earns the first call-up in England
England confirmed the recording of O’Reilly with a short statement on Monday morning.
It said: “Nico O’Reilly of Manchester City has received his first call to the Senior team of England. The 20-year-old is moving against the MU21S team and is contrary to the coming matches of the three lions against Wales and Latvia.”
The statement added that his selection “follows the withdrawal of Reece James”, which was excluded “after stopping an injury for his club at the weekend.”
Chelsea also recognized the situation on social media and simply said: “Reece James has withdrawn from the England team of October.”
Why did Reece James pull himself out of the team of England?
Shortly after Saturday’s game, James placed an image of a stitched cut on his leg on Instagram – supposed to be the injury that forced him.
James, 25, has been closed 21 times since 2020 by the Three Lions, but has now missed five international camps because of various fitness oppositions.

Man City fans claim that Nico O’Reilly is an upgrade on Reece James
Supporters of Manchester City quickly responded online to news about the first senior international call-up from O’Reilly and many were delighted.
A fan said it was a “big chance for Nico” and supported him to take it.
Another claimed that “England did not lose a competition with that guy left-back.”
Some went on, with one message that described him as ‘the best English left back’, while another added: “There is no better left back at the moment.”
Direct comparisons were also made. “Nico O’Reilly is bigger than Lewis Skelly,” read a comment.
Others were just happy to see him recognize. “They finally recognize him,” wrote a city fan.
A particularly confident supporter even stated: “With Nico at left back, believe me, it will finally come home this time.”
