Nick Kyrgios responds to Alexander Bublik’s comment after the victory over Aryna Sabalenka

Nick Kyrgios believes Alexander Bublik made “an interesting comment”, but also fair, when the Kazakh said he would not choose the Australian to represent men’s tennis in a match against a female player.

Just before the US Open, a match between the 2022 Wimbledon finalist and WTA world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka was rumored to be in the works.

During that time, Kyrgios appeared on a podcast with Bublik. Not only that the Australian did not deny the rumors, but he also very openly stated that the rumors were true. The seven-time ATP champion confidently declared that he would probably beat Sabalenka easily, while the Kazakh – knowing the Australian’s personality – noted that he was probably not the right choice for such a match.

Finally, the match took place last Sunday and Kyrgios defeated Sabalenka 6-3 6-3. Afterwards, the former ATP world number 13 – who has a great relationship with Bublik – was asked about the 28-year-old’s comment from August.

Kyrgios on Bublik’s comment: Someone had to say it

“It’s an interesting comment from someone who has molded his entire game around me. I mean, we’re all thinking about it. Someone had to say it. Bublik is a good friend of mine. And let me just start by saying getting to see him and how well he’s done over the last year, it’s incredible to see,” said the 30-year-old Australian.

“I always knew he had the ability to do these great things and achieve these great things. But look, Bublik, and let me tell you, there are players who message me day in and day out that you represent us. It was serious pressure.”

Kyrgios also claimed that Bublik was not the only ATP player who put pressure on him during the match against Sabalenka. He also told the Kazakh that he was “next” to play against a WTA player.
