The Leafs, Florida Panthers and Tampa Bay Lightning are among the Atlantic teams with few trade assets, while the Detroit Red Wings, Buffalo Sabers and Montreal Canadiens have plenty of assets to work with.
The Leafs don’t have a first- or second-round pick this year, nor their first next year.
Missing the playoffs and not selling pending free agents wouldn’t be a disaster. Pending free agents include Bobby McMann, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Nick Robertson, Nicolas Roy, Max Domi, Steven Lorentz, Scott Laughton and Troy Stecher. It’s an important time leading up to the deadline for the Leafs.

McMann could get as much as $4 million on the open market. He has size, speed and shooting, but he is inconsistent. If they traded him, they could get two quality pieces.
