The Calgary Flames will usually look the same on the way to the 2025-26 season, because the team has not made any major movements this season. However, the team remains the dedication to become younger, and Zayne Parekh is one name that the fan base would like to see in action.
The ninth general pick of 2024 is undoubtedly the best prospect of Calgary. He made his NHL debut against the Los Angeles Kings in the last match of last season, where he scored his first career goal. With its dynamic skills and high ceiling, it really feels like heaven is the limit for him.
With a training camp about a month away, the expectations for Parekh are considerable. Some already have him in the opening night setup of the Flames, while others have to see even more. Anyway, the excitement for this player is huge, but what would a successful season look like for the 19-year-old if he indeed makes the schedule of the Flames?
Which brings parekh to the flames
The PAREKH projections suggest that he becomes the most important top-four defender who specializes in offense. He is the type of defender who thrives as a Power-Play Quarterback, and the Flames can use an elite presence in their special teams.
The OHL has not proved to be a sufficient challenge for Parekh at this stage. He had a historic season and placed 107 points in 61 games with the SaginaW Spirit, and it’s time to try to make a leap in harder levels of hockey.
Unfortunately, because of the CHL rules, Parekh cannot play in the AHL until he is at least 20. So from now on it’s the NHL or back to Saginaaw for a different season. Parekh makes the schedule of the Flames that that youthful eruption of energy, and it would also sell tickets. Parekh would add an offensive presence to a blueline that does not have many offensive options (assuming Rasmus Andersson is traded before the training camp).
How parekh will be used by the flames
As much as I want Parekh jumps straight into the top four, I don’t think that is realistic from the gate. Although Parekh is a prospect of blue chip, the flames cannot risk its development by hurrying to give him tough minutes immediately. That said, I believe that Parekh is ready, or at least he is very close.
I think we see Parekh in the beginning that Bottom -Pairing get minutes, just to get used to NHL hockey. Depending on how he does it in that role, the decision can be made with regard to his place in the line -up. However, if the flames succeed in exchanging Andersson for training camp, things can change.
Here is how I see the defense of the Flames in both situations:
With Andersson still on the Roster:
Bahl-Andersson
Hanley-Wewar
Bean-parekh
Pachal/Solovyov or Brzustewicz (extras)
Traded with Andersson:
Hanley-Wewar
Bahl-Parekh
A PACL
Solovyov/Brzuszewicz (extras)
If Andersson is traded for the opening evening, it would not surprise me if Parekh sees top-four promotion faster. I think the flames will give him every chance to prove himself, especially in special teams where he thrives. But I think it is more realistic scenario that Parekh will initially play on the bottom pair to start things, because I don’t see that Andersson is being traded for the camp.
It is a shame that Parekh is not yet eligible for the AHL, as if he were struggling, the flames can easily send him to the Wranglers, where he plays more advanced hockey. I think the OHL is too easy for him for the time being, because it makes no sense to dominate another year in juniors when you can make the leap to pro hockey.
Realistic expectations of fans
Let’s say that Parekh makes the team of the training camp; What would a realistic season look like for him? Although expectations are somewhat high, many of us must also come to Earth. Parekh could very well have a Calder-worthy Rookie season, or he could struggle out of the gate. It ultimately depends on how well he performs in the camp and what role the flames give him most of this season.
For me, my expectations are not outrageous just because I do not want to set myself up for disappointment. There is no doubt that Parekh has talent, but the flames have to do their best to help him translate his play into the NHL. That means giving him the most opportunities he can get to build his self -confidence. The last thing fans want to see is Perekh Popcorn Eating in the press box.
In terms of points, I do not expect that Parekh will have a season of 60-65 points in his smoking year. Of course it would be great if he did, but the flames are also a team that has no supporting talent. If he spends the entire season in Calgary, I think that 40-50 points can be reasonable, assuming that he will stay healthy and get opportunities. But of course the talent suggests that his ceiling is quite high, and perhaps he shocks fans with how quickly he adapts.
Anyway, there are zero disadvantages to Parekh that makes the opening night schedule of the Flames. He has the tools to become an elite NHL player, and the flames cannot afford to mess up his development.
