NHL Rumors: Nylander, Kadri and East Contender Blockbuster – The Hockey Writers NHL Rumors Latest News, Analysis and More

In today’s roundup of NHL rumors, the news regarding William Nylander is starting to look less than ideal. Meanwhile, the Calgary Flames will likely speak to Nazem Kadri about his desire to be moved this season and already have teams reaching out regarding his availability. Finally, does any Eastern Conference contender announce they are big game hunting this season and looking to make a huge swing?

Nylander remains out, Maple Leafs have plans for Woll

Jonas Siegel from Athletics reports this”It is not yet clear whether William Nylander will be part of the Leafs lineup again on Tuesday night. Nylander was not a full participant in today’s practice. He went through some drills and rotated sporadically to the top line. He did rejoin PP1 during the special teams portion of the practice.”

Nylander’s missing time for Toronto is hugely problematic. The team is off to an up and down start and he leads the team with 14 points in eight games. The Leafs viewed him as a potential fit on a struggling top line. Now that he’s gone, head coach Craig Berube is looking for solutions again.

Meanwhile, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving says the team’s focus is on getting Joseph Woll fully up to speed. Woll will not speak to the media Monday, but has been skating every other day for the past few weeks. It’s likely he’ll see some conditioning games with the Marlies before returning to NHL action.

Trade future of Nazem Kadri

Darren Dreger discussed Nazem Kadri’s potential future with the Calgary Flames, noting that it is likely the organization and the forward will begin discussing a potential move this offseason.

Among the teams said to be interested are the Carolina Hurricanes, as Eric Tulsky has reportedly already contacted Calgary to gauge if the team plans to trade Kadri. “They would want to have that conversation.” Dreger said. He added that if Calgary and Kadri decide the fit isn’t right, teams like the Montreal Canadiens, Vancouver Canucks and others looking for a second-line center would likely be very interested.

David Pagnotta also suggested the Flames could look at gauging interest in Rasmus Andersson and Blake Coleman.

Hurricanes ready to make blockbuster trade

The Carolina Hurricanes are ready to go big this season and look to turn their playoff consistency into a Stanley Cup. Since Rod Brind’Amour became head coach in 2017, Carolina has the NHL’s best regular-season points percentage and multiple deep playoff runs, but the ultimate prize has eluded them. Tulsky has made it clear that he is more than willing to add a superstar if opportunities arise.

With key players like Sebastian Aho, Seth Jarvis and the newly acquired Nikolaj Ehlers, the Hurricanes are healthy, skilled and motivated. Michael Russo of The Athletic writes:

“There’s no doubt that owner Tom Dundon is motivated to add a star to the group. When the Wild tried to extend Kirill Kaprizov’s contract before the season and reports emerged that he had initially turned down a $128 million contract over eight years, the assumption around the NHL was that Kaprizov did not want to re-sign there. In the three-week period between Kaprizov turning down the deal and an extension $136 million signing, league sources say Hurricanes were the only team to contact the Wild to express interest if it ever got to the point where the Wild would consider trading him.

Tulsky said they will look at everything this season and at every position. If there is a player – regardless of his status and the price to acquire him – that makes the Hurricanes a Cup favorite, the Hurricanes will pursue him.
