Jason Robertson wants more than Mikko Rantanen and can force a trade

Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos: Dallas Stars pending RFA Jason Robertson is looking for more than Mikko Rantanen’s $12 million, which could lead to his eventual trade. The Stars are said to be looking for players and not just picks and prospects. It could be more of an offseason move.

TSN: Chris Johnston thinks the Toronto Maple Leafs’ top priority is finding a right-handed defenseman with Chris Tanev out. They also research the trade market to see what forwards are available.

“The problem that’s been going on all year, and it continues to be a hurdle, is that they can’t get into the big game stuff. They just don’t have the first-round picks and other assets that you see moving in some of the bigger trades we’ve had already this season. So it’s going to take some creativity. It may take some bargain hunting. But the Leafs are focused on a few different fronts right now in terms of potential activity they’d like to add players.”

Exploratory talks between the San Jose Sharks and Kiefer Sherwood

TSNNow that the San Jose Sharks have given up two second-round picks for forward Kiefer Sherwood, you would think they would want to sign him to a contract extension, according to Chris Johnston.

“And I think there have been some initial exploratory discussions, but the parties don’t necessarily see the world in the same way yet. And so it may take some work and time to get things in order.”

Johnston adds that Sherwood will likely start at Macklin Celebrini when he returns from injury, and that he is likely willing to sign an extension, but it will cost the Sharks. I’m not sure the Sharks are ready to go that high yet.

TSN: Johnston says there’s still a pretty big gap and not much progress has been made.

“There’s still some work to be done, and I think Sherwood has no problem securing as much as $30 million for a long-term deal.”
