The Devils will trade Hamilton in the right deal
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined Daily Faceoff Live with Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton and discussed the state of play with Dougie Hamilton and the New Jersey Devils. While the Devils want to move him and free up space, Pagnotta says they want to make a trade that makes sense for them.

NHL Rumors: The New Jersey Devils and Vancouver Canucks Intrigues
Host: “Dave, are there any rumors about Dougie Hamilton or the New Jersey Devils? I know you guys had a story on Hamilton and the Leafs during The Fourth Period, but what’s the latest on Dougie Hamilton and what the Devils are trying to do to save their season?”
Dave Pagnotta: “Yeah? Well, I mean, so the conversations with New Jersey are continuing. They’re trying to make this happen. They’re going to have to keep that contract, or take money back. Like significant money. Like this isn’t a scenario where New Jersey is going to free themselves the full $9 million, but they’re trying to see how much cap space they can create, and how can they make a deal that benefits them?”
Because they just don’t want to lose Dougie Hamilton. This isn’t a scenario where this guy is a complete mess and is having a bad season, they just don’t want to deal with him anymore. There is still value in this player. He’s still a second-pair, top-four type, exactly D-type, and there’s value in that.
NHL Rumors: Dougie Hamilton and Marc-André Fleury Buzz
Obviously the season is low, and the $9 million cap figure affects that, plus the fact that he has, I think, a $7.4 million bonus that is paid out on July 1, then it’s $1 million dollars for the rest of the season, and then the last year of his contract is just regular salary. I think it’s a little over 5.6, something like that. So the overall money is going down, but they want to make things happen here by freeing up a little bit of space and also taking a step that makes sense to them.
Well, yeah, Toronto has been looking around. Carolina did a little snooping. I think Utah did that. A few other teams are also part of this mix. Still, I don’t see a way out for Toronto because I don’t think they can make it work financially even if they eat the Devils half, which I don’t think they want to do. I think they’re willing to eat a little. I just don’t see a scenario where that’s appropriate for Toronto.
NHL Rumors: New Jersey Devils want assets back in a Dougie Hamilton trade
Toronto is actively looking for a good prospect D, and that is the priority now. There were some who talked, some who watched. And I think if someone fell into his lap in the top six, he or she would go for it. But the priority for Toronto right now is getting a defenseman with the right shooting skills.
But I just don’t see Dougie Hamilton being realistic at this point unless we’re talking about a much bigger trade, but I don’t see any sense in it right now. Utah is a curious one for me. They’re not afraid to make some swings here. They are not afraid to spend money. And they’re looking for someone of his ilk to bring to Salt Lake City. But again, it has to work financially.
