Would Jonathan Toews consider a trade at the deadline?

Sportsnet: Ken Wiebe, when asked if he thinks Winnipeg Jets forward Jonathan Toews would consider going to a contender at the trade deadline or if he wants to stay with the hometown Jets.

Matt Marchese: “Jonathan Toews, that was it, it was going to be a slow start after not playing for so long, but the game has picked up lately, the offense picked up.

But if he does, you know, and maybe he rides this out until the trade deadline, but do you think there’s a chance he might consider moving somewhere else if he believes this is his last, his last time, and he wants to make it. You know, try again for a Stanley Cup. Or do you think there is a match with Jonathan Toews in the longer term?

Wiebe: “Yes, Mattie, that’s a great question. And I think Jonathan wants to play beyond this year as well. I mean, obviously there were some challenges at various points in terms of, you know, long periods without offensive production. But I think he’s in a good place coming out of the break.”

Now that offense has disappeared a bit as the schedule has ramped back up. But I do see a guy who can help a struggling team. We know teams like the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning were among those interested when he decided before choosing Winnipeg.

I think he loved playing in his hometown. But you guys know this: as much as Jonathan loves winning, he hates losing, and this is a guy who hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2020, I think, if I’m not mistaken. So for a guy who came back to try to win the Cup, I think he would be open.

I know you guys had Elliotte, and they said this was going to be a topic of conversation, you know, with the tab reps during the Olympic break. I think he likes it, and I think with the way he’s put together, he’d like to see if he could help the Jets in more of a playoff situation.

But I think he also thinks that if it could help the organization, he would be open to a contender. But again, he didn’t talk about this. He concentrates on that here and now. But I do find it an intriguing situation. But I do think he’s a guy who can definitely help, help, help a contender.

And I really think he will play more than a year just because he has weathered the challenges that come with returning in an Olympic year with such a short playing schedule.”
