NHL GMS looking at a rumor lower McDavid number

A general manager of NHL asked NHL Insider Elliote Friedman If he sincerely believed his own prediction that the Connor McDavid extension would come in with a lower annual salary than most analysts expect. Friedman said he couldn’t know that, but he was confident. The same GM said he hoped that Friedman was right, because a lower McDavid deal could change the NHL landscape in favor of NHL franchises.

While negotiations on contract negotiations of big name extend to the training camp, there is a growing feeling around the NHL that try to “hold the line” on escalating salaries. In the meantime, Connor McDavid does what is best for Connor McDavid, and takes the time before he connects a new deal – one that many will expect to come in on a surprisingly low number.

The failed expansion talks between the Minnesota Wild and Kirill Kaprizov emphasize that some teams have difficulty making their players sign what they see as ‘honest’ deals. There were reports that Minnesota offered an instant for eight years with $ 16 million per season, only for the winger to reject it. Although no other team throws away a similar figure, that number has shifted the landscape.

McDavid was able to restore it.

McDavid could determine the NHL market at lower contracts

Agents push the bar higher, while managers ask where the ceiling is real. Many wait for McDavid, the best player in the NHL, to give everyone the official high-end.

McDavid is the high figure for NHL salaries … kind of

The captain of Edmonton Oilers was expected to manage a historic deal for the coming years. Yet some believe that McDavid will surprise everyone by taking less than expected to keep the schedule of Edmonton competitive alongside Leon Draisaitl, Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse. If that happens, GMS hopes that they could temper demand elsewhere.

The wrinkle effect can be huge, given the harvest of UFAs that may be on the market next summer. If McDavid signs for less than $ 16 million per year, teams that negotiate with players such as Kaprizov, Jack Eichel or Kyle Connor are comfortable and say that everything they agree must be less than $ 16 million and in accordance with the McDavid deal.

Yet there is doubt about how much one deal can influence another – especially when agents are armed with the argument that every situation is unique. For example, Kaprizov is not expected that it suddenly guides a deal in Minnesota worth $ 16 million or less if the McDavid deal is for $ 15.5 million per season.

For now the market remains in Flux. Teams want to protect flexibility under a rising cap, players want to maximize the value and the final decision of McDavid can be the Domino that defines where the line is drawn.
