Newcastle United’s official injury update followed the win against Athletic Bilbao

An official injury update from Newcastle United followed on Wednesday evening at St James’ Park.

United took a very valuable three points in the Champions League.

A brilliant long-range header from Dan Burn gave Newcastle the lead early in the first half, before a clinical header from Joelinton gave the keeper no chance just after half-time.

The 2-0 victory means that Eddie Howe’s side are sixth in the Champions League halfway through the competition phase, having played four of eight matches, with nine points out of a possible twelve.

With the top eight automatically qualifying for the last 16 knockout stages and those finishing 9th to 24th heading into a play-off, United are now in a very strong position.

However, there are injury concerns for Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.

Anthony Gordon was forced off shortly before half-time, while Will Osula was ultimately absent from the bench despite originally being named among the substitutes.

Eddie Howe gives this official injury update from Newcastle United after the win over Athletic Bilbao:

Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon, who was eliminated after 41 minutes:

“I haven’t spoken to him and I haven’t really had a full overview of the medical team… but it appears that the hip injury that has plagued him in recent weeks is resurfacing.

“So we’ll assess that and see what damage has been done.”

Eddie Howe on Will Osula not being among the substitutes despite being named one just over an hour before kick-off:

“We have spoken to him extensively in recent days about his ankle, whether he is fit enough to actually perform at the level we need and what he feels comfortable with.

“After a discussion we felt it was best to withdraw him and try to get his ankle 100 percent right.”
