What about Newcastle United and the woodwork?
There are some crazy statistics at play.
The question is whether Newcastle United can break through their addition to the woodwork.
With 23 games played in all competitions, you can guess how many times Newcastle United’s players have hit the crossbar and post.
Below you’ll find the answer to that, but before we get there, here’s a look at the statistics.
Here’s the number of times each club’s players have hit the woodwork in the 15 rounds of Premier League matches so far:
9 Newcastle United, Manchester U
6 Burnley, Palace, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool
5 Bournemouth, Sunderland, Man City, Wolves, Arsenal
Villa 4, Leeds
3 Brentford, Forest, Fulham, Brighton
2 tracks
1 Westham
I think it’s fair to say that if you’ve conceded nine goals in just 15 Premier League games, you’re pretty unlucky.
If you add to that the fact that Newcastle United have now hit the post twice in the Carabao Cup AND twice in the Champions League, it becomes even more bizarre: already thirteen times for NUFC, in 23 games in all competitions.
I find it even more bizarre, BUT also positive, if you then divide the season so far in two for Newcastle United.
In the first twelve games of this 2025/26 season, Newcastle United only hit the woodwork three times, against Wolves, Bradford and Forest.
In the most recent eleven games, Newcastle United have hit the woodwork ten times, meaning Fulham hit the woodwork at home in late October. United players hit the woodwork ten times in just over six weeks.
Breaking it down further, Newcastle United players have hit the crossbar or post six times in the last four games! Once against Everton and the same against Spurs, then two against Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen.
In the last four games, Newcastle United have hit the woodwork or the back of the net 16 times.
My take on all this is that Eddie Howe’s players are getting more and more dangerous attacks and there are attacks both on and off goal.
I think a team that does the above will score a lot of goals if they continue like this.
The finishing also needs to be improved, especially inside the penalty area.
However, I think we are seeing a much better goal threat building up and Yoane Wissa could be a huge addition to that once he is fully fit and up and running.
The arrival of in-form Anthony Gordon is also huge.
Against Spurs he came off the bench and his run and cross led to Bruno’s goal.
He was then sensational in his two starts against Burnley and Bayer Leverkusen.
In addition to scoring against both penalties, he was a huge threat.
Creating for others AND giving Newcastle United a huge goal threat by shooting outside the box, something we haven’t been very good at. He has hit the woodwork three times in the last two games and goals will come with that kind of skill, especially when you shoot with both feet.
