The England national football team’s lineup is constantly undergoing changes, just like any other professional sports team. There is always talk about new players joining or current players leaving for whatever reason. Recently, Nick Pope, who plays as a goalkeeper for Newcastle United, said he still has a chance to be selected for the 2026 World Cup squad.
In the run-up to major international competitions such as the Football World Cup, there is always a huge amount of gambling activity. People visit online sportsbooks like GGBet and place bets on their favorite players and teams, hoping to win and make some money. Although the World Cup won’t take place until next year, sportsbooks are already accepting bets on it.
What Nick Pope has said about joining the national team
Pope recently spoke at a press conference ahead of Newcastle’s match against Benfica, which Newcastle won 3-0. He said playing for Newcastle was his priority and he always wanted to do well. However, when the World Cup comes around, playing for the England national team will be at the back of his mind.
He spoke to Thomas Tuchel shortly after he became the new manager of the national team on January 1 this year. He also spoke with goalkeeper coach Henrique Hilario. Although nothing definitive came out of the conversations, Pope believes the communication he has had with the two has been very good. He therefore feels that he is eligible and could have a chance to be called up to the national team.
Something Pope isn’t keen on is making a direct pitch to Tuchel. He prefers to focus on being a great goalkeeper and let his skills, abilities and experience speak for him. Tuchel has been in his role for less than a year and there is a good chance he will be working on the 2026 World Cup line-up to leave his mark on the industry.
Pope’s experiences with World Cups
Pope has previously played in two World Cups and would love the opportunity to play in a third. The first time he played in the World Cup tournament was in 2018. He was then called up in 2022, but ultimately turned out to be an unused substitute. He says that at his age there will not be many opportunities to play in a World Cup. If he achieves another, whether in 2026 or even 2030, it will be a special achievement.
The 2026 World Cup will be the first to be jointly hosted by three countries: the US will be the main host, while Canada and Mexico will be co-hosts. The competitions will take place in 16 cities across the three countries, with 48 national teams (up from the previous number of 32) participating. It takes place from June 11 to July 19.
We won’t know what the final lineup for the England national team will be for some time yet. Whether Pope makes the team remains to be seen. He seems optimistic and hopeful that he will get a place. If he doesn’t, he’ll be more than happy at Newcastle United.
