Newcastle 4 Bradford 1 – Wednesday 24 September 2025 7.45 pm
Instant fan / writer response from some of our regular contributors on the MAG.
Nat Seaton:
‘OK, it was League One -Position (which happens to watch the top of the competition, but a part of the football that we played tonight was a pleasure to watch.
I thought it would have been harder than it turned out to be, but credit the team performance for this.
Four goals and a team full of confidence that we can hopefully record the Arsenal match on Sunday, bring it up! ‘
Billy Miller:
‘Routine victory, but nice to see that we get a few goals for our banker 3 points on Sunday.
Botman and Thiaw could be back our starting center in a year or two and I think they looked decent together. Both can ping a pass and wear the defense’s ball. Hopefully they can stay fit and meet their promise individually and like a link.
We definitely have a stronger team than the last time we were in the Champions League, so that we can rotate with confidence. ‘
Simon Ritter:
‘United called the entire Brazilian with a master class of the midfield of Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton. One de orchestrator, the other the finisher.
Perhaps even more important for the long term, Will Osula had by far his best match in a black and white shirt, and scored the second and fourth goals of his team, while the keeper tests the keeper at least three times.
Lewis Miley will have benefited from playing the entire game. He can also learn from the error that led to the goal of Bradford City (who would probably have rejected VAR for handball).
Anthony Gordon was full of effort, but often quirky with his shooting and judgment. His replacement for the last 27 minutes, Harvey Barnes, looked more precise and he was much sharper than in Bournemouth on Sunday. That is a good selection -dilemma for Eddie Howe when we are confronted with Arsenal on Sunday.
Big Nick Woltemade seemed to have cemented his place in the starting line-up with an impressive cameee in the same 27 minutes. ‘
Jamie Smith:
“I mean, that’s perfect, right?
Free fluent football, comfortable due to the peace and good use of the team. We even let the Geordie score for the visitors.
Job done, time was that this would have been a headache cum shame, but a solid start to (squeaking) our defense of the cup ” ‘
Gatoon:
‘Delicious of the version.
That was exactly what we needed – a victory and to play well.
Hopefully that gives us the confidence to start our season.
All guys played well and put a lot of effort into it.
I spent the last 39 minutes watching Nick. He is class and is exactly what Eddie said – a very smart player who can see a pass. He is not a CF, but he is very effective in advance. Excellent link up play. Happy days. ‘
Mark Jankowski:
‘If it was not a bit of a loose game and a huge chance of Bradford’s cook, it would have been the perfect performance against the opposition of the lower competition.
We scored a number of incredibly well -processed goals and came physically intact because of the game, even with more rotation of Howe.
He will make a number of decisions to go for Sunday’s game, but the cup defense is active! ‘
Matt Busby said …:
‘Mission completed. In the next round, undamaged, and the four goals we received could easily have been five or six.
I will not consider the error that the Bantams has given their comfort, but we cannot do that against a better opposition.
Great to see that Osula gets a brace; Joelinton too. On another night our other Brazilian could have scored a few.
I wonder if they will heat the balls for the draw? ‘
Tony Mallabar:
‘Well, the headless found someone his level tonight.
And Muckle Joe found his score again.
Fair Play for the Bradford fans because they have made it a fantastic atmosphere. I am not condescending, but as a lower competition teams such as Bradford cannot play competitive at a higher level, the pleasures of Cup Football have disappeared. ‘
David Point:
‘Our defense of the League Cup is active in good style.
Four goals in the bag, and no lack of respect for Bradford (TOP from League One), but that was a fairly easy night work for United, amidst seven changes in the Startline -up.
A nice adjustment for Joelinton who is back under the goals – a brace of them. Osula also takes the chance of double, while Miley did reasonably well with a new start.
Bruno, as always, excellent in midfield.
We also had many chances, which is a good sign and even had time to let the visitors withdraw one. ‘
Davey Hat-Trick:
‘A fairly routine victory against the opposition of the lower competition, and to be truthful, we dominated for the vast majority of the game.
Many good versions (Malick Thiaw looks a baller) and not a bad one. Very happy for Osula.
A word for the Bradford fans. They were in the city all day and were an honor to their club. Stayed singing long after the game was decided. I hope they get promotion. ‘
The armchair fan:
‘Stand inside!
Very simple victory, much easier than expected and a successful start of the defense of our title. ‘
