New Zealand: INDIA CLASH GOING UNDEFEATED

The Vantage Black Sticks produced another strong performance in their third match of the 2025 Sultan of Azlan Shah Cup, securing a 4-2 victory over Canada in warm, dry conditions after the match was brought forward two hours due to persistent weather conditions and player welfare considerations.

The opening quarter was one-way traffic. The Vantage Black Sticks completely dominated the first 15 minutes, generating 23 circle entries and 10 scoring chances, while limiting Canada to just one of each. Despite the pressure, the breakthrough failed to materialise, with the best chance denied by a brilliant diving save from the Canadian goalkeeper after a powerful shot from Sam Lane at the top of the circle.

The second quarter finally delivered the momentum the Vantage Black Sticks had been building. George Baker opened the scoring with a sharp deflection from a quick baseline pass, and moments later Sam Lane doubled the lead from a well-executed penalty corner. The team continued to create chances throughout the quarter, but the score remained 2-0 at halftime when Canada allowed a third goal.

The third quarter was bursting with action, producing three goals within the first two minutes. Isaac Houlbrooke struck first with an excellent reverse-stick finish on a counter-attack that originated deep in the Vantage Black Sticks half. Canada responded immediately with a penalty corner conversion that slipped past Leon Hayward and the runners, making it 3–1. But moments later, Baker restored the cushion and scored his second of the match with a high-quality post-up, roll and upright finish. The Vantage Black Sticks took a 4-1 lead into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter brought frustration for the Vantage Black Sticks. Although we continued to dominate and create numerous chances, the last pass or connection was often lost. Several goals were missed on the field, and Canada capitalized with a second goal late in the match. However, the Vantage Black Sticks closed out the match and secured a deserved 4-2 win.

With three strong games behind them, attention now turns to a big match against India, one of the best hockey countries in the world. Level one opposition is a rare opportunity for the Vantage Black Sticks outside of the major tournaments, and tomorrow’s match will be a must-watch for fans.
