Fresh from the back of participation in the US Open Mixed Doubles event, the British No1 Emma Raducanu will open its singles campaign against a qualification, born in America Japanese ena Shibahara, in the opening game at Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday, which can be viewed live on Sunday from 16.00.

I am happy with the work we have done and the process. I’m a good player. I can play on any surface. Iga Swiatek

Raducanu hopes to achieve her first victory at Flushing Meadows since her historic run to the title 4 years ago, and if she does that in the 2nd round, the world no. 35 would take on another qualifying match, Janice Tjen van Indonesia or 24th Seed Veronika Kudermetova from Russia, with probably former Wimbledon.

Raducanu landed in the upper half of the draw, with its 3 British countrymen, all in the bottom half.

Three-time WTA title holder Katie Boulter has received a heavy hand in her opening round, with the British No. 3 set to take the 27th seed Marta Kostyuk, which she defeated in March 2024 on the way to the biggest title of her career at the San Diego Open.

If Boulter can beat the Ukrainian for the second time in her career, she could get a qualifying match in the 2nd round and in the third rule of the Australian open champion Madison Keys.

Just like Boulter, Sonay Kartal will have a tough battle against 18th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia, but she defeated the Brazilian in their only earlier meeting in this year’s Indian Putten when British No. 2, born in Brighton, dismantled her, 6-2 6-1.

If Kartal comes through her first round match against Haddad Maia, she would challenge Roland Garros semi-finalist Lois Boisson or Swiss Viktorija Golubic in round 2.

The British short is completed by Fran Jones, after the British No. 4 took its way through the qualification this week without losing a set such as the No. 1 seed.

Rank on 86, Jones had bad luck not to get direct access, but she has acquitted herself well through 3 rounds to set up a meeting with German no. 1, Eva Lys.

If Jones gets through her opener, she could meet the no. 21 seed, Linda Noskova of the Czech Republic, who plays the Hungarian qualifying match Dalma Galfi in the 1st round.

“I am happy with the work we did, and the process,” she said after securing her 11th WTA 1000 title, only in the second place of Serena Williams 23. “I am a good player. I can play on any surface.”
