Gabe Perreault is one of the most exciting talents in the New York Rangers Prospect System. He received a taste of the NHL last season, worth five games with the Rangers. On Friday, however, the team decided to send the 2023 first round pick to the Hartford Wolf Pack for some extra development time in the AHL.
Perreault will join the Wolf package with a raised pedigree. He established the national team development program – record for the most points in one season in his concept year and produced 132 points – 15 more than the previous record holder, Auston Matthews.
He also had two very productive seasons at Boston College and placed 108 points in 73 games for the Eagles. In addition, Perreault is a double gold medal winner at the World Junior Championship with 20 career points in 14 games in the tournament. He also has a gold medal from the world championship under 18.
Perreault has had a decorated young career, but there is even more for him to put together as a professional.
That is why going to Hartford is probably the best place for him at the moment. In the near future, Perreault will probably be part of the Rangers, but playing in an increased role with the Wolf Pack is much better for its development than being in and out of the line and playing a depth role at the big club.
Perreault misses prototypical NHL size and his skates is closer to the average, but he has an elite brain for the game. He is one of the smartest players I have looked at over the years in terms of how he creates offense, where he places himself when he does not have the puck and all the decisions he is able to take quickly.
Perreault will get his chances and if his track record is an indication, as it is done differently everywhere, he will produce.
The AHL can be a challenging competition to find time and space, which will be great for a player who has never really had many problems in that department.
In just 20 years old, Perreault still has a lot of runway to grow in his game and find his professional legs. Fans may have hoped for a much faster progression to the big club, but the threshold to bloom at the NHL level at a young age is slightly higher than where Perreault is now.
In addition to Perreault, the Rangers also sent Scott Morrow to Hartford. Morrow was an important piece in the return for trading K’andre Miller to the Carolina Hurricanes. Morrow was an AHL All-Star last season and named the best prospect team in the competition. Those are two major pickups for Hartford while they want to prepare for their season.
The Wolf Pack opens their season on 11 October on the road against the Wilkes-Barre/SCANTON Penguins. You can watch that game here on flohockey.
