Steve Kouleas: “Okay, I’m on your site. Jacob Markstrom. The Devils are winning. He’s confused. He’s confused.” Jake AllenI think so Nico Dawswill go tonight. What’s the latest on Markstrom? Is there a love affair between him, his agent and Tom Fitzgerald?
NHL Rumors: Tom Fitzgerald wants to keep Jacob Markstrom
Dave Pagnotta: “Well, look, there’s obviously a mutual interest on both sides to try to get something done here. I think a lot of it has to do with term, in particular. And when we talked to Tom Fitzgerald, their general manager, on Saturday, he emphasized how much, and he kept saying that both Jacob and Amanda, his wife, wanted them to continue to be part of their family. There’s no question that they want to keep that. They want to maintain it.
He seemed pretty confident that they would get something done. Of course it’s just a matter of timing, when that can happen now. Because he is injured and because he is just getting back on the ice and skating, they wanted to let him heal for a while before resuming discussions. A bit of a lull in business, but they clearly want to get something done.
But it will just come down to the structure of this deal. And because he’s close to 35 on the next deal, that’s a factor in these discussions and negotiations. So again, they want to get there. We’ll see where they go. But it’s going to take a bit of creativity, from the sounds of it, in terms of how this will ultimately be structured with different bonuses that could potentially be present.
But I mean, there’s a mutual goal in getting an extension. It just depends to what extent. Of course they have to find that out.”
NHL Rumors: The New Jersey Devils are looking to extend Jacob Markstrom
NHL Rumors.com Note: The New Jersey Devils still have a small gap to close to get Jacob Markstrom extended. They want to keep this goalkeeper tandem together with Jake Allen as their goalkeeper of the future. Mikhail Yegorov plays at Boston University and won’t be playing in the NHL for a few years. Allen just signed a five-year contract for $1.8 million per season.
Reports have surfaced that the Devils initially offered Markstrom and his camp a four-year deal worth $5 million per season. However, with Markstrom having an injury history, the Devils and Tom Fitzgerald want to make sure they are on the right side of an aging contract. However, both sides want this to happen.
